Though she and Hero look absolutely nothing alike, Margaret, caught in a romantic embrace, is set up to be mistaken for her mistress by the evil Don John (Keanu Reeves) who is desperate to break up the betrothal between Hero and her intended, Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard). Though she had appeared in a few prior films, Staunton’s big introduction to international audiences was in Kenneth Branagh’s hit Shakespearean comedy in which she plays Margaret, the lady-in-waiting to the very marriageable Hero (Kate Beckinsale). Staunton takes the tough, authoritarian side of her repertoire and plays the bluster for laughs, and, as she did with Thompson’s script for “Sense and Sensibility,” she can play to Thompson’s rhythms beautifully.
